This was an interesting topic to read about this week and am glad I get to read others opinions. I enjoy how you not only took a look at those in favor of the Veterans Readjustment Act but also at the opposing side. Looking at the group who opposed Roosevelts New Deal and relating it to the topic at hand. I also liked the back and forth correlation of the 40s and the 60s throughout the core of the project. I feel this allowed for a wider showcase of emotion or feelings people had toward the bill as a whole. The topic at hand brings up a good point in your last paragraph. The balance of education and concern with government spending. I wish however there was a more concrete answer for enigma. What was the reasoning or how did government truly feel about the bill? Was it in the soldiers favor or another long term financial game? (I Pledge, 158)

Lyndon Johnson admired people with a good education and did much to make education available to all Americans. (By the way, he was insecure dealing with all of the Ivy Leaguers in Washington and, in particular, in his administration because he attended a small teacher’s college in San Marcos, Texas–the same school that I–decades later, by the way–attended for both my B.A. and M.A. That school is now Texas State University, with nationally recognized doctoral and research programs and a student body close to 40,000.)

Thanks to Johnson’s Great Society–which we will read about more later–we got the Head Start Program and numerous other programs to expand the availability of education to many of the country’s poorest children.

At his 1965 signing of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (at the elementary school he had attended in Johnson City, Texas), President Johnson said: “Within the past three weeks, the House of Representatives, by a vote of 263 to 153, and the Senate, by a vote of 73 to 18, have passed the most sweeping educational bill ever to come before Congress. It represents a major new commitment of the federal government to quality and equality in the schooling that we offer our young people. I predict that all of those of both parties of Congress who supported the enactment of this legislation will be remembered in history as men and women who began a new day of greatness in American society.”
