In viewing the Life Magazine covers from 1965 to 1972 for one of my essays focusing on the Vietnam War I noticed many cover pages that were devoted to the Civil Rights Movement as well as many cover pages that were devoted to models and actresses. The images of the models put great emphasis on the white beauty standard. With such an important magazine putting great importance on beauty standard I can see how and why Stokely Carmichael wished to put importance on embracing culture rather than trying to suppress it. I find your opinion that Carmichael may have saved the culture from white beauty standards that Hollywood and other media outlets pushed interesting. Do you think if he had continued supporting this would things be different? How do you think things may have turned out if he had not been pro violence?

While representation in Hollywood is certainly much better than it was in the 1950s and 60s, it’s not for nothing that we make jokes about how Hollywood executives clearly threw in the “token minority” or how we know a character is going to die first in a horror movie because they are black. In addition, the problem he mentioned with beauty products and the tendency of corporations to market products that place “whiteness” or traits associated with being white as a beauty standard still exists as well.
