Hello David,
I also did my project this week on these two films. I found the film Red Planet Mars to be particularly interesting. Films can be great representations of the time period that they were made. Throughout the film, I could see the obvious fears of the American people but I did not see that ending coming. Tensions in the world had to be unimaginable if a single lie could cripple and bring the end to a super power. Do you think that the writers created the religious twist at the end on purpose? Also do you think that this was a more of a warning to the world or some sort of propaganda in the fight against communism? I found that I might need to watch it again in order to really start to drawing parallels to the film and our readings.
Part of the anti-communist argument was the anti-religion side of communism (which argues that religion is the “opiate of the masses,” luring people into focusing on life after death rather than on life on earth, i.e., with the exploitation of communism; Christianity convinces people to be “meek” and to accept the evils on earth because it will earn them salvation).
