Cameron,
I enjoyed your post about values of the 1950s because it includes the reason why many women went back to ordinary house work, and taking care of children. Not many people mention this detail and I believe it is an important aspect of why women chose to return to domesticity. A baby boom would be a very good reason.
While I also believe that commercials depicted American values such as family, and where wives should focus their work, I saw an overall value that was hidden behind commercials that I think may have been missed. Consumerism seemed to be a value of America as well. Whether it is due to the fact that many women were extremely happy that they could purchase whatever they pleased since they no longer had to ration items as they did during the war for extra war supplies, or if it is due to the fact that more jobs were available after World War Two, I am not so sure of, but it appears that the marketing industry was booming.
