Readings, Postings, Grades, Writing Center . . . and Contacting the Instructor (rev. 5/18)

1. Students are expected to complete all reading/film requirements and read all projects and responses/comments. All are part of the course and “fair game” for the final project.

2. ** POST  PROJECTS ONLY IN THE APPROPRIATE WEEK/SECTION, E.G., “WEEK 1-1.” This is the only place where the instructor will look for projects.

Start with “Student Projects and Responses,” then click on the appropriate week (e.g., “Week 1 Projects and Responses”), and then on the appropriate week-section (e.g., “Week 1-1”).

Do not post in additional categories [e.g., in “Week 1” and “Student Projects and Responses”].

See Tech How-To.

STEPS FOR POSTING PROJECTS:

Select Files
Choose your PDF file. (Projects MUST be saved and posted as PDFs. Do not post as Word documents or type into the post.)
Copy the URL at “link to” (on bottom right side of screen), not at “URL” at top right
Click “x” at top right of screen
Paste the URL into your post
This  will show the document and not require your readers to click on a link, i.e., do not use “Insert in Post” on the bottom right of the screen.

Be sure to post project in the correct category. Scroll through list in box on right side.

3. Do not get confused by the Canvas grade book. Ignore the “Projects” and “Totals” categories as they will not “add up” and make sense until the end of the course.

4. Your projects should take full advantage of assigned readings and films. Your use of the required material will be explicit in some projects and implicit in others.  If you do additional research, provide a bibliography for those sources. Projects that rely on required materials–and your thinking about them–can be considered “thought-piece” essays; those that use additional sources can be considered “research” essays. (Don’t worry: the instructor understands that there can be a fine line between the two and that projects can be hybrids.)

5.  While the requirement is two COMMENTS a week, students are encouraged to interact with each other more frequently. (Also, feel free to respond to responses . . . to your project or to classmates’ projects.)

6. SUBMIT WEEKLY SUMMARIES BY E-MAIL.  A basic 1-2-3 list (perhaps in bulleted form) is all that is necessary. Each week, you may submit the “same” list with the new additions clearly indicated.  (Keep in mind that the overall session list is required at the end of the course–along with a short overview essay.)

7. Do not ignore the requirement to go to the WRITING CENTER. The requirement to go during the first two weeks AND during the last three weeks is explicitly stated in the course syllabus (which everyone should carefully read). The summer tutor (Dan) took this course last summer and is familiar with the requirements.

8. Contact the instructor through e-mail: cferrell@umw.edu
