George Kennan appeared to be a very smart man and I found the article about him very interesting. I do find it ironic that he was insulted for condemning the Truman Doctrine when the Doctrine was based on Kennan’s thoughts. It was believed by President Truman, as well as other important decision makers, that Kennan advocated containment in his telegram. Although, Kennan did believe that people misunderstood what he meant when his telegram was proposed. In Kennan’s time, one of the columnists for foreign affairs claimed of Kennan, “‘For a diplomat to think that rival and unfriendly powers cannot be brought to a settlement is to forget what diplomacy is all about'”(latrides). In my opinion, I think Kennan was just trying to give them some background on how the Soviets were. It sounds like Truman may have ran with that idea.
